LONG BRANCH, April 4– Seashore Preschool has given more than 50 three year olds a leg up this year and they proved it to their parents and grandparents at a Gym and Science Show held at their 345 Second Avenue Campus in Long Branch last week.
The two-part show included a different science activity each day, ranging from digging for dinosaur fossils, exploring the solar system and studying the weather to focusing on energy. After science, it was on to the gym where children dressed as Yankees and Mets hit ball after ball off a tee and climbed to the top of an apparatus known as the Super Climber, which was taller than their gym teacher who spotted them.
According to Preschool Director Dawn Lehman, Physical Education Instructor Lou Conner and Science Teacher Pearl Bottoms, the show was held to give children a chance to demonstrate how far they have come this year and feel proud of accomplishments. “Young students get a self esteem boost when they master a task that first seemed difficult,” she said.
Since the preschool campus has its own science lab, gym and indoor pool, Seashore is able to take learning beyond the classroom and way beyond the basics. “Our goal is to make learning fun and at the same time teach young students to focus, follow directions and begin to solve problems,” said Lehman. “By starting physical education at this level, preschoolers develop eye-hand coordination, balance, dexterity and confidence – skills all children need to succeed,” she added.
The Seashore School, which opened in 1974, is designed for families who want a smaller class size and more progressive curriculum than their town offers, at an affordable tuition. Starting with preschool and going through eighth grade, the curriculum includes advanced foreign language, computers, science and swimming lessons, along with training in dance, music, drama and art. The approach to education is so successful that students perform a grade above their peers, score in the top percentile in standardized exams, are recognized nationally for academic achievement and typically gain acceptance into the high schools of their choice.
