INTERMEDIATE SCHOOL (GRADES 5-8)

The last step is our fifth through eighth grade program, which continues helping students develop the skills needed to excel in high school and take their place in an increasingly competitive society. Intermediate students participate in a fully departmentalized, academically rigorous curriculum with specialized master level instructors in each subject. More emphasis is placed on individual responsibility for academic work. Assignments are given further in advance. Projects become larger. And subjects are integrated across disciplines.

Unlike large intermediate schools which may be overwhelming, the transition to these grades is easy at Seashore because we work closely with each student, monitor individual progress and coordinate the timing of tests, projects and homework to keep the course load manageable.

An Award-Winning Education
Really Takes Students Places

The diversified curriculum includes the classics and contemporary literature, algebra, geometry, chemistry, biology, astronomy, physics, social studies, Spanish, technology, art, music, physical education and swimming. To supplement what is taught in the classroom, there are trips to Columbia University, Leadership Conferences at Brookdale Community College, Broadway shows, New Jersey Shakespeare Company Productions, Liberty Science Center, The Museum of Modern Art, fossil hunting at Poricy Park, “Star Parties” at Sandy Hook, Great Adventure Physics Day and more. Our approach to education is so successful, students take first in competitions like the Spring 2010 and Fall 2009 Marine Academy of Science and Technology Middle School Tournaments and typically gain acceptance to top schools including Biotechnology High School, High Technology High, Allied Health & Science, Communications, Marine Academy of Science and Technology and Christian Brothers Academy.

Aspiring Journalists Can Write For
“Seashore Student Views,” Which Won A 2011
Silver Medal From Columbia University

Students are taught to write and design an eight-page, four-color newspaper, which was critiqued in 140 categories and won a 2011 Silver Medal from Columbia Scholastic Press Association, part of Columbia University’s Graduate School of Journalism – receiving outstanding marks in editorial content and design. As part of the course, they join delegates from middle and high schools across the Northeast for the annual Fall Journalism Conference at Columbia’s historic Morningside Heights Campus for a full day of workshops on all aspects of student publishing with top journalists throughout the country.

A Wholesome, Family Environment
Where Children Make The Right Choices

In addition to an exceptional education, the most priceless commodity Seashore offers is its wholesome family environment, free of typical middle school experimenting that can derail lives. This is a place parents feel comfortable sending their children, where they make friends who are positive influences. It is a close knit community of focused, engaged individuals so immersed in athletics, the arts and other assorted pursuits ranging from professional and community theater to fencing, horseback riding, competitive figure skating and gymnastics that veering off course is not even on their radar.

Electives That Develop New Talents

Fifth through eighth graders choose electives in subjects that interest them such as art, ceramics, jewelry making, astronomy, journalism, creative writing, cooking from the Edible Schoolyard, forensics, drama, dance, chorus, swimming and sports.

Interscholastic Sports Where All Children
Can Play On School Teams

In addition, students can develop athletic ability, learn teamwork and develop camaraderie by competing on soccer, basketball and track teams which have made it to the playoffs. Since they don’t have to compete with hundreds for limited spots, those who want to play, get an opportunity to play.

A History Of Success

We are proud to say that Seashore students typically score in the top 90th percentile in standardized exams, test out of Freshman Spanish and Algebra 1, have been invited to participate in New Jersey Clean Ocean Action Annual Student Summits, and have been recognized for academic excellence by Johns Hopkins University as well as The White House. When boys and girls graduate, they are poised, confident, well-rounded individuals, who excel academically, athletically and socially at whatever public or private high school they go on to attend.
